Volunteers are a valued and necessary resource of the Mission. National
Volunteer Week will be celebrated April 22-28 and we would like
to take this opportunity to salute the many individuals and groups
who contribute their time and talents to assist us in meeting the
needs of those we serve. Cooking and serving meals, tutoring, providing
chapel services, assisting with activities for children, working
in the Donations Center, and being a positive role model are just
some of the ways that volunteers add to the lives of individuals
staying at the Mission.
Recently, the
Mission was fortunate to have several volunteer groups working on
different projects around the Mission. Members of the First Presbyterian
Church of Gallipolis served lunch and then went on a tour. The youth
of Venson Memorial Christian Church were participating in a "World
Vision: 30 Hour Famine" to gain a personal awareness of hunger.
During the last hour of their fast, they painted an area of the
Men's Shelter, sorted food and clothing, and cleaned the Ministries
Dining Room. Members of the Marshall University Lion's Club put
a fresh coat of paint on the walls of the lobby in the Women and
Family Shelter. Two shelter rooms received a decorator's touch from
members of the MU Medical School Alliance who painted, applied wallpaper
border, and hung pictures. Volunteer Aaron O'Brien gave free haircuts
to the gentlemen staying at the Mission. These individuals along
with many others give 'service above self' which is not an uncommon
occurrence at the Mission.
