Homelessness......It is not just men. Youth Services
No one wants to be homeless, especially a child. After all, the most devastating effects of poverty can be seen in the eyes of homeless children. In addition to the array of services for adult populations, we have developed healthy programs and activities for children and youth living at the Mission. Staff and volunteers provide spiritual nurture and counseling through a well-planned series of activities including after-school tutoring, cultural and recreational outings, arts & crafts workshops and plenty of playtime in either one of the large outdoor or indoor play areas. Our Good News Club, held on Sundays, introduces children to the love and Word of God.

We also operate a summer camp program, which is open to underprivileged children living in the Huntington area.    Summer camp incorporates daily devotions, trips to local parks, museums, swimming, hiking, skating, and other fun activities that would normally not be available to them. High school and college students from area churches help make this a memorable experience for every child by nurturing healthy relationships with them and showing how God's unconditional love can heal all wounds.  Please go to our special events section for more information on our camp program.

CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING SPECIALIST:  Glenna Wells is on staff as our children's programming specialist.  Glenna coordinates activities for the children living at Project Hope.  The activities include monthly birthday parties, after school meetings, homework groups, crafts and games.  the Holidays such as Valentines Day, Easter, and Christmas are always celebrated with the children.  Marshall University students come twice a week to assist with the activities.

Once a year, a "big event" is planned for the children such as a trip to Kings Island or the Wave Pool.  The children and their parents work doing special fundraising to raise the money for this trip.  Their fundraising may include bagging groceries, delivering lunches, rummage sales, and etc.   Also, many local businesses and individuals donate just for this yearly event.

Glenn is continuously looking for new ideas for the children's activities.  If you are interested in volunteering or have ideas from your experience of working with children, please call Glenna at 304-523-0293 or e-mail at gwells@huntingtoncitymission.org
